i have really been getting into gouache lately. it comes in all sorts of colors including metallics, and it makes a shiny, flat and even layer of intense opaque color, which is great for my graphic style. it's relatively expensive, but a tiny amount of gouache covers a large area. plus, the traditional (not acrylic) type can be dried out like watercolors and then used in cake form with a wet brush. i love this because i can make a convenient little kit like the one to the left out of a cheap watercolor set, and paint anywhere really easily (and i don't have to waste any leftovers).

so far i have mostly painted on paper with gouache, and i'm pretty sure it would work on a gessoed surface, but i wonder how it would do on untreated masonite. if it works well, i may be through with acrylics entirely! why didn't i learn about this in art school?
