personally, i think alex grey is one of the greatest living painters, and while some people know about his existence, it's amazing to me how many don't. he has lots of great work on different topics in a similar style-- religious themes, the human life cycle, nature, and so on, depicted biologically, energetically and spiritually (not to mention creatively).
