there's a pretty good conversation over at tait's blog about anarchists and their allergy to religion/spirituality. to me, the usual argument against seems pretty silly. it goes something like this: anarchists don't like hierarchies, so they don't like religion/spirituality. that makes some sense in terms of hierarchical religious organizations, especially if they are hard to avoid. but the whole no gods, no masters thing seems a little bizarre to me. i guess maybe it's a sophisticated way of summing up the idea that since the state of god is kind of unconfirmable, you may as well decide whether to believe in it or not based on whether you feel like it. but for most values of the words "god" and "believe", the idea of not believing in god because you don't want someone to be the boss of you seems kind of funny. not believing in god because you don't believe in god, well, that's another story.
