am i too old to be trying to choose a career? maybe i'm just getting my midlife crisis over with early. anyway, i'm proud of the way i've really worked hard at writing this year to actually support myself and get paid a decent wage for doing skilled work, but i have to admit that the writing itself, while totally professional, has hardly been anything to write home about. here are eight jobs i think i would actually like to do:
family counselor
free school teacher
alternative health practitioner like an herbalist or some such
real visual and performance artist with shamanic (wholistic health and spirituality) overtones
illustrator with shamanic overtones
art professor at a school with a liberal definition of art
author of books on related topics
life coach
to me these things are all really related. basically i want to help people feel free to do whatever they want in a healthy and responsible way. however, they're pretty different in practical terms. if i actually want to do any of these things professionally i probably need to decide which and make a real effort to get more training and/or experience. hmmm. i am really afraid of commitment when it comes to work.
My guess is that family therapy and art faculty are probably the two of those things that pay the best while still leaving you relatively free to not spend half your time trolling for clients/book deals.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, both of them require more schooling. Fortunately, I bet you can do both of them in like 2 years, since I think terminal art degree is MFA anyway, and I think you can do a nonPHD therapy thing.

if a job can keep you in the money you need go for it. you can always change.
